Frequently asked questions

What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art focused on taking an opponent to the ground, controlling them and using joint locks or chokeholds to force submissions. It emphasises leverage and technique so smaller practitioners can defeat larger opponents.

What should my child wear to class?

For the first class shorts and a t-shirt are recommended; the academy can provide a Gi if needed. After about one month of attendance the academy asks that you purchase your own Gi and rashguard.

Do you offer a trial?

Yes — Griphouse Academy offers a two week free trial for new members.

Are there competition classes?

Yes — the academy runs dedicated competition classes and has a junior competition team that has medalled at IBJJF European Championships, British Nationals and other tournaments.
